Introduction to the New EMR Adoption Program
The new EMR Adopter funding is provided by eHealth Ontario and managed by OntarioMD Inc. The funding program is intended to increase the number of Ontario physicians using certified electronic medical records (EMR) applications in their practices. OntarioMD began accepting applications for new EMR Adopter funding on November 2, 2009.
Highlights of the New EMR Adoption Program
- eHealth Ontario is committed to providing $236 million over a 3 year period
- The goal of the program is to have 5700 more physicians using certified EMR by 2012
- Family Practitioners and Specialists can apply for EMR funding
- Total funding for local EMR products is $27,100 per physician
- The program will provide both one-time and monthly funding, as well as transition and adoption support services.
- Funding applications will be accepted from November 2, 2009 through to September 30, 2011
- Extended funding with upgrades for participants of the PCIT Program can receive monthly subsidies of $400/month
- Applications for upgrade funding will be accepted through to January 31, 2012

Who can apply for the New EMR Adopter Funding?
Practice-based primary care physicians, both family practitioners and specialists, who meet the following conditions can apply for New EMR Adopter Funding:
- You manage and maintain medical records for your patients
- Your records are not maintained on a system provided by an organization such as a hospital, long-term care facility or Community Health Centre
- You are not using an EMR that was acquired through a government program
- OHIP Billing of $3000 in the last 12 months
Early Adopters will have subsidy extention
Early EMR adopters, who helped expand and evolve the program, are also eligible for a monthly subsidy in order to upgrade their EMRs to the latest certified specification once the PCIT monthly subsidy payments have ended.
Application Period
New EMR Adpotion Funding applications must be received by OntarioMD by September 30, 2011.
New EMR Funding Agreement Deadline
The agreement must be signed by the Applicant and received by OntarioMD by March 31, 2012.
